they will stand anywhere from 6"-20" tall and will be used for home decor. I'd like a machine that will do all the work for me.

Well, if you want the machine to do all the work, then you need a CNC routing machine. The cheapest one out there for the average joe is the Craftsman CompuCarve, available at Sears for a cool $1800. You design the work on a computer, then the machine cuts it.

Unless you have that kind of money, then the best thing for your needs is in fact a scroll saw. A bandsaw is going to be the next logical choice, but since the blade is thicker you won't be able to get as intricate with it. Finally a handheld jigsaw would work, but again yor work wont be as intricate or accurate.

Whats your problem with a scroll saw???

I think I would get a router. That will not only cut the wood that is 1/2'' thick but you could also use it to put all kinds of different edges and striations on the letters. If you do, get a Dewalt combination plunge/fixed based router.
If you don't like that idea the next best is a bandsaw.

I would go with a bandsaw. You can get one at Sears Craftsman that is 10" for $159.99 which will cut wood 5x10. If you want a full size saw it is 20x more costly with an 18" throat.

Buying a high quality one used will cut the price down to hundreds from the thousands.

Sounds like a small router with a bushing to guide the router bit through a pattern would be the way to go for that project. A router is about the most versatile handheld tool you can own, you would be able to make perfect edges of all shapes and forms, and do things only limited by your imagination. Pick up a router use book too and have fun!

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/hStSd
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

Cut Out Wood Letters

Do all the work for you. Hmm, you need a CNC laser. You're gonna spend thousands of dollar son it, have to make the garage bigger to hold it and take night classes for a while to learn to run it. But it will be fun and the letters will be cool.

It's not a laser, but these guys will teach you to use their CNC router: http://www.sawdustshop.com/CNC_Shopbot.asp

might consider a bandsaw they can cut curves and stuff but a hard time getting into tight spaces with one.and no getting into the center of the letters either.

That kind of machine will cost you a fortune. I just use my jigsaw and it works fine.
