Yes, cashmere for sure is warmer than any other wool you can find in market. But only if its 100% cashmere. generally when you buy cashmere its always mixed with other type of wool or silk to reduce price.
If you really want to enjoy warm and soft cashmere then go for 100% pure cashmere.

RE:
Is cashmere WARMER than other kinds of wool?
I know cashmere sweaters are soft and lightweight. But when it comes to winter coats, ounce-for-ounce, is it actually warmer?

Wool and cashmere are basically the same thing although cashmere is more expensive, fragile but a lot softer than the wool material. There are several kinds of wools - Merino wool (similare to cashmere but more durable), Lambwool which is durable but a bit itchy and Alpaca, Shetland and Mohair (which what Ive heard are bit itchy...). Personally, I go by wool blend (allergic to pure wool and fosfor material) My thickest and warmest pair are from H&M with the material 35% Wool/33% Rayon/22% Nylon, 7% Angora and 3% Spandex and another pair which is a velvet/polyester kind. But in my opinion, I think layering tights/leggings over eachother is the best method to keep yourself warm. Fitted (Spandex) first - Wool blend in the middle - Thin Tights/Leggings on the top, is the way I personally layering them. Works best to me. Wool is almost like an insulator! In Swedish winters it can be as cold as -18'C/0.4'F outside, so I cant keep myself warm with one pair and the tights/layering even beat the jeans when its come to keeping yourself warm. I wear between 2 to 5 layers in different materials/thickest of tights/leggings depending on the temperature outside. ... so in the end its really hard to say what would be the warmest to you!

for a winter coat, cashmere is very warm. Next choice would be a wool/cashmere blend and then probably just wool. i wore my ankle length, cashmere coat on new year's eve in New York and when it was 20 below zero and I was nice and toasty.

No, your better off with a big ol' number, instead of a flimsy cashmere sweater..they are just more expensive in the long run.

You won't find a wool winter coat made of cashmere because it would be too expensive. Most winter coats are made of sheeps wool.
