Now that's a good question. I don't know.
Please let me know when you find out!

I'd say that's nearly impossible. How many people can honestly say that they have 'given it their all' and come up short? There are far too many roads to travel and when you reach one dead end, you go back and you try another. I don't think that for the most part, that humans can actually live long enough to have traveled every road and come up empty.
As an aside, if that could actually happen, how would we have so many clever sayings like, "Where there's a will, there's a way" or, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again", etc...

My life story.. It's the old glass being half full, or not, or, the wrong container for the application. When you've done your best, one has to be careful to not let anyone else be the judge of that. Failure is not a hardened reality, but a point to stop and see what you've learned. Better preparation, getting more help, and more time to exert against a situation can carry the day. Pevious experience is what failure is when that experience lets you succeed later. But coming in second, well, that's still first loser. Hold on.

If you feel that you have given it all and have fallen short, you keep pushing on!
There is infinite wisdom out there.. if you feel that you can answer every question in the world to what it is that you have accomplished then... you teach!
Once you feel that you become a teacher of what you know completely then all you have to do is become a student again... there is something always out there to keep you on your toes.. which is what I am trying to accomplish here!
I have my teachings of what I have accomplished, at points during my career I also felt that I came up short but I kept on moving on.
I have my career laid out here in accordance to the Bible, and I guess you can say I did an "oceanremix" to it

That's the time for a moment of reflection and, if you've planned well in advance, to switch to plan B.
But I'd prefer to give less than all. When the diminishing returns get to the point where it is costing me more than I am benefiting from my efforts, I haul out my plan B (my next best choice). At least I know I got some amount of utility from the effort.
(if you think I sound like an economist, then all my study has not been in vain... regardless of the outcome).

I think if you believe that you have come up short, after giving your all to something, then you haven't taken from whatever you have given to if not at least the knowledge that you gave it your all.

Learn from your mistakes and start all over again, hopefully not making the same mistakes the next time around.

I would look at my method, and why I felt to give it all.
I would not get in this situation.
Give only what you can without depleting self.
If what you give is not what is required, look at why you thought you should give what you did.
I always listen much, do some, give some, stay centred, and connected to all that is.
Otherwise one has lost their own energy.

You come up short for nothing, as long as you REALLY give it your all. Which can actually be a depressing viewpoint.

Internalize the despair, watch a stupid movie, wake up the next morning and do it all over again.
