hey folks,

i was wondering if it is normal to change major in college. I am currently majoring in CIS (Computer Information Systems) and i don't feel i am in the right place. I have grown up with computers all my life. for me this class is really slow and yes i have consulted with teacher asking if i can give exam and move to more challenging course. She told me i can't because they are required classes. On the other hand...i am planning to major in a career that requires hands on activities. Specifically in technological field such as engineering.

Would really appreciate your help :)
Thanks!

its completely normal...i don't think everyone knows exactly what they want to do when they enter college (or when leaving college :P), your interests change all of the time, so just do what really interests you ....however, if your school requires you to take core courses (basic stuff just so you can graduate) you just have to go with the flow...those classes are designed for everyone and aren't meant to be very challenging....as you go into the upper level courses that will count towards your major, they'll definitely intensify, so I wouldn't just base your whole major-changing decision on this one class...

best of luck :)

I think I am confused. If you really plan to major in an engineering field, why are you doing a major in CIS?? Why are you not majoring in the field in which you wish to work? By all means change your major. Most universities use the freshman and sophomore years to cover required "General Courses" anyway and everyone takes those since they are common to almost all their degrees. Get them out of the way and use the time to really examine your interests so the selection of a major can be made realistically.

Most people change majors and LONG after they are Freshman. For example people in the 40's and 50's "change majors".
How are you supposed to know what you should be doing work-wise when you are 18 or 19 years old? Impossible.

Well, it depends. But i think we go to college just to discover ourselves, or our interests and potentials. if i have discovered mine, then i will jump into it instead of being dragged by some courses just because of credit.
we are here to find the truth of ourselves, so if you have found it why hesitate more?
