Ponds are like large puddles - they are water that has accumulated in a depression or low lying area of land.
A river is water in motion, moving from a higher elevation to a lower elevation.

The only similarity is that they are both composed of water.

I've seen clean ponds and filthy rivers.

A river is a moving body of water that flows downhill and empties into a larger body of water such as a bay, lake or sea. It has a current.

A pond is a still body of water formed by overflow from rainfall, or fed by small streams or an underground source, such as a spring. Man-made ponds are formed by digging below the ground's water table.

A river empties out in the ocean or connects to another one that empties out. It constantly has to move either upstream because of an earthquake or down stream which is normal.A pond is just a body of water. And rivers are much more cleaner. :)

ponds are still while rivers are always flowing, therefore, rivers have cleaner water than ponds.
