I saw a few clips of Bill Maher on youtube, discussing the Armenian Genocide Resolution...
He made the coldest, snidest remarks about the resolution...
Like how its "irrelavent" because it was 92 years ago...

I'm pretty sure if Germany denied that the Jewish Holocaust ever took place, Bill Maher's stupid a** wouldn't be standing up there joking that..."stupid Congress wants to recognize the Jewish holocaust..that'll show the Nazis of WWII"(sarcasm)...

I'm so mad!!!!!

Am I overreacting???

Edit: And its not just Bill Maher...don't get me started on how badly CNN and MSNBC covered the situation...

I guess if its not important to the ppl in charge of the media, then biasing and spinning it wont really matter right..

This has EVERYTHING to do with whats going on in the world.

Concerned about Darfur? Why should you be? the people killing them, denies its happening, so we should'nt care right?
Is anyone aware that Turkey is throwing scholars, historians, and Nobel prize winning journalists (Orhan Pamuk) in prison, for daring to speak about the Genocide?
You wanna talk about human rights and turkey in the same sentence? What a great ally!!!!!

Hi. I think that "billy d" who answered you above made a right point. Turkey is a key transport hub for the U.S. forces stationing in Iraq. If the resolution is passed and becomes a law it will result in a significant (though probably a short term) damage to the U.S.-Turkey relations. In retaliation the Turks might (and probably would) (1) close their air space for the U.S. Air Force (2) start a war in Northern Iraq. The former would seriously complicate providing supplies for the U.S. troops in Iraq and the latter would seriously complicate (if not completely ruin) the efforts to stabilize the country. Both these possibilities should they become real would increase risks for U.S. soldiers in Iraq.

Actually, I am much more angry with the Europeans who hypocritically claim their adherence to high moral standards, but as a matter of fact not only refuse to recognize the genocide (well, some of them actually did but far not all) but even do not make the recognition of the genocide a precondition of the acceptance of Turkey in the European Union.

Bill Maher hates everyone. He is an ego maniac with an inferiority complex and to be pitied. Here is a real funny one , a dear friend of mine (a fundamentalist Baptist minister)had a Jewish mother and an Irish Catholic father and he's not angry at the whole world about it. Bill get over it! We don't care about your hang ups. Save the drama for your momma!. Here are the tissues, you've got issues. A good resource on the Armenian genocide is "Power Faith and Fantasy"... America in the Middle East 1776 to the present by Michael B Oren published by W.W. Norton

Yes, you are overreacting. Bill Maher actually said he deplores the slaughter of the Armenians, and that he has nothing against them.

He was commenting on why the Democrats seemed so focused on commenting on something that happened before WWI. He was commenting because he felt it was hollow posturing for some particular special interests, and seemed especially foolish from a Congress that does nothing about Iraq, corruption or a myriad of issues that are pressing TODAY and NOW.

He's right. They do have more important things to do, and, particularly, they don't need to be pissing off a key ally we need, strategically, in the region right now. Should they stand on principle? Again, if you can't point to single life saved, or wrong righted by this action, I might disagree with him. For the history books, that's something that can be dealt with at any time. They do have much more important things to do.

He doesn't hate Armenians, he hates symbolic resolutions (or so I assume from what you said he said).

Uh, implying the chance we have now to prevent killings, maimings, and rape is exactly the SAME as giving a purely symbolic and largely meaningless gesture over something that happened nearly a century ago is disingenuous, at best.

Yes, all genocide is wrong. However, they can't be undone.

Criticizing the resolution is NOT the same as committing or allowing or condoning genocide.

There were reasons to say the timing of the resolution was sub-optimal.

The point was that in the broader contexts of very meaningful current events substantially effecting the American people and the world that the congress could be dealing with; voting on a resolution that scathed a NATO state and American ally, through which all American military aid for the war in Iraq travel, was extremely stupid.

Bill Maher is a comedian who mixes politics and humor to get ratings. I don't care for him much myself but I give him props for handling the 9/11 conspiracy nuts.
