When I was driving, my temperature was at H and steam was flying out my AC vents (not good signs). So I put cold water in it after I waited 2 hours for the radiator to cool off and the same thing happened. And i have a 94 Ford Ranger for extra info.
I'm car illiterate and I need help.

So many questions to ask, did you have to add much water to the system after it cooled? Did you smell coolant inside the cab? Was there any water on the floor of the truck? My first guess would be a stuck thermostat, then a leaking radiator hose, a loose or broken connection at the heater core. Was there any water on the ground under the truck? Best bet, have someone familiar with mechanics take a quick look. It shouldn't be too hard to find out where the problem is. Don't drive the truck with it overheating, or you could lose the engine. Good luck with it.

If steam was coming through the vents in the dash then most likely it is a heater core issue. Cooling system leaks under the hood leak there and rarely ever dome through AC vents.

Never ever poor cold water in a turned off HOT engine. The steam may erupt and burn you badly and you may crack the block too.

The heater core is connected to the radiator via 5/8" hoses. Is is located usually in front of the passenger side inside a black box called a demister. This box also contains the doors for where air comes out and the evaporator for the A/C. Therefore any moister coming through vents must come through the demister or from it.

Best of luck to you.

Change the thermostat, it is stuck closed or not working at all. Follow the top hose from the radiator to the Thermostat housing, remove and replace with new gasket. $15.00 job. Fill with antifreeze, 50/50 mix not plain water. $20.00. Total job if you do it yourself. about $35.00 Check all the hoses for leaks first, fill the system with antifreeze and run the engine.

first off if your drivin and it happens again turn your temper gage on hell hot and the fan up the highest it will go this will draw the heat from the motor into the car, cooling your motor off just enough for you to get where your going.
double check and see if you have liqid other then condensation in your tail pipe.... cause it might be head gaskets
also check your thermostat.
and orget your radiator flushed
