Take it in little parts. It works for everything in my life. Ten little parts is much less overwhelming than one big part.

first of all, know that relaxation is a discipline, it takes practice to be skilled at it, don't give up, be patient and commit
take control over your thought flow, meditate
know too that being fixated on something won't change a thing, won't make you better at anything, no one person who has been successful at anything actually fixates like you describe
exceptional atheletes take time for family, fun, relaxation, love, etc.
major business tycoons also take time to be themselves too, so change your perspective a bit, you're relying on a beleif that is a bit warped and it'll cause more harm to you mentally and physically if you keep it up
what's most important in your life?
learn to balance.
these are things you really have to inventory personally before meditation will work
try routines like this
set up a candle with a litle bell or something on a short table and sit in front of it, light the candle, ring the bell, whatever and allow yourself to obsess and fixate for twenty minutes, while you do nothing else but sit there, after twenty minutes riing the bell, blow out the candle, and walk away from that spot
throughout the day as the thoughts come up stop them and order them out of your mind like you are ordering small children out of your clean kitchen, remind the thoughts that you won't think about them until you are sitting at your table and when you are there you will devote your undivided attention, tell the thoughts that while they might be very important, right now, you are living and you won't stop living just to think about them,
take control
also, use exercises that use both sides of your brain while you try to relax, this makes it impossible to think about anything else, for example, count letters of the alphabet, picture the letter A and say to yourself "one", then picture the letter B and say "two". Do this for all the letters, when you get lost or distracted start over, be patient, don't give up, it'll get easier.

For me it's seeing the outdoors. Laughing at my circumstances. Realizing that loss isn't a ticket to death and that I can go on... I pray and I walk outside and sometimes I'll see the happiness of children and their joy blesses my day. It's life and **** happens and so worrying and strife is only known for causing... wrinkles, early aging and illness. You don't need that. Good herbal teas also help. A therapist has been known to allow you to vent and so it helps. Determining if my problem is worthy of my frustrations. Then again laughing at myself.
If you can laugh at your situation you can take a deep breath and make a decision that will give you peace. I am a woman of faith so for me I can't over emphasize Prayer.
