i am going to a black tie optional event without a date?

the event is at an embassy-i own one blue-meduim long dress(gown) strapless or a knit burgancey and black dress long with sleeves-or do i go with a black cocktail dress

It's hard to go wrong with a little black dress. If you were going with a date, I would say the long dress because he would be in a tux. But since you are going solo, the cocktail dress will be more appropriate.

i would probably do the black cocktail dress. it is dress, but not too dressy since it is a black tie optional event. the strapeless might be too formal since it is floor length. and knit just wouldn't be the right fabric. sounds nice, but not dressy enough.
