When it comes to hitting, it's Albert Pujols. A-Rod is great, but he's not consistent enough. One year he'll eat pitchers for lunch, the next he's above average (not bad, but not as good as before). You never know what you're going to get from A-Rod. Yet, every season Pujols has had, he's finished Top 5 in MVP voting, he may not finish Top 5 this year, but I guarantee he'll finish Top 10.

Pujols is incredible, it's that simple. He's the best hitter in the game, but when it comes to all-around. I'm saying Jimmy Rollins, or A-Rod.

The VAST majority of a player's worth comes at the plate (except for pitchers, of course). Nobody is likely to save a run a game with their glove and arm as it is defense is spread all over the field. Also, the replacement players at key defensive positions tend to be able to field, they just often don't hit that well.
There were years when Lou Gehrig, a so-so fielder at an essentially unimportant fielding position, was the best player in the game.
So it pretty much has to be the two best hitters of the last several years, Rodriguez or Pujols.

The best offensive player in the game today is hands down Albert Pujols. I hate when people cry to me about Alex Rodriguez. Pujols is and always will be a bigger game changer at the plate than A-Rod, and he's already won a World Series thanks to his ability. This may seem a tad arrogant, but I can pretty much assure you that if Pujols was placed in the Yankees lineup of last season, every stat minus steals would have been higher than what A-Rod accomplished. Oh, and he plays gold glove defense at first, which doesn't hurt him either.

Well it is NOT A Rod, and I defy anyone that can show how he is the best. He NEVER hits in a clutch situation, his post season record is one of the worst in baseball history and defensively he is average at best. Defensively he makes allot of errors, one of the highest number of errors in 2007 for a 3rd baseman, his range is below average, 120 strikeouts in 2007 (1503 strikeouts in his career so far 5 times more then Joe DiMaggio had), hit into 15 double plays in 2007. Other than hitting allot of home runs, when his team already has the lead, he is barely an average ball player. That is why every team has done better after he left, because once you get past how many home runs he hits, he is not that good.

I am a red sox fan, but you have to look at the broader spectrum here. One of the greatest catchers of all time, Jorge Posada, is overlooked in every way when we talk ab out baseball greats. His cumulative average for the past 10 years is over .300, and his an outstanding defender. And as far as comparing his attitude, you couldnt ask for a better silent leader. If Jeter is the captain of the team, then Posada is definitely the soul.

Like Schmidty said, a player is speed, hitting, team work, leadership, and fielding. Derek Jeter is Mr. Baseball. He has been the team captain of the biggest venue in baseball for years now and carries it well.

I figure everyone would say A-Rod. Can't really figure that one out. I must be missing something.. He can hit home runs, sure. But he made quite a few errors at 3rd base this year (wasn't even in the top 10 when voting for best defensive player of the year)). And quite obviously, his clutch hitting leaves a lot to be desired. So.....in my opinion, a "best player" would, I assume, be an ALL AROUND good player
(and that includes attitude and team player). So.....because A-Rod does not fit that bill, let's just scratch him off of the list, and in place of him, my vote goes to Mike Lowell of the Boston Red Sox.
All around excellent baseball and team player.
