get a cheap 2 or 4 gb flash player, like the Samsung YP-u3, or the creative zen stone. These are cheap, relatively durable since they have flash memory and have no moving parts, and are really small so they can fit in pockets. ipods are way too overpriced and overhyped, not to mention lacking many features that other mp3 players have.

Preteen? As in, twelve or younger?
Whatever you do, DON'T spend the money for an iPod! Wait a couple years until they get older!
I'm not saying he/she is irresponsible, it's just that the iPods are very expensive and if you're not careful, it's easy to break or misplace them! I'm 16 and I've had my new iPod for 3 or 4 months, and already the back is covered in scratches and I've got a few little marks on the screen that won't come off.
I suggest buying a cheap MP3 player from WalMart or something for $30 or $40. =) Then, if they take very good care of it, go for the Nano. Not the new video Nano, the 2nd gen one.

get an ipod for them. Probably an ipod nano for a preteen. It is the best on out ther for the best price. Even though it is about 200 dollars, it is worth the money in the long run, also apple just updated their ipods, so they are brand new!

I have an iPod nano, and it is AMAZING. I have no idea what I would do without it.
The only problem I've had was with the screen freezing, which has happened 3 times in the past 2 years.

Get the Ipod. I have the 30 gig video one and I love it. I currently have over 3 thousand songs and a showtime series that i watch when traveling. you can also put games on it.

they are both very good. but try 2 find something at wal mart or best buy.
