ok I have a 1999 Lincoln Continental the service engine soon light came on and was reading coil one is misfiring. So I take it to the shop and have coil one replaced. Well when the mechanic took the plate off to change the coil he found about 6 inches of oil in there. he blew it out, tightened the valve covers and replaced the coil and said I must have a oil leak.....here's the thing I check my oil religiously in fact I checked it right after I left his shop and the oil level is great and has been since the last oil changed it's just below MAX. So do you think this is old oil from a previous problem? Old oil from the valve cover being lose, or do you think I have a leak?

You might need all the value gaskets replaced, but maybe the tightening will work.
Check the PCV valve. That probably has never been replaced. If this goes bad pressure can build up causing oil to mist though gaskets.
Also what kind of oil are you using. Try a blend rather than a full synthetic.

A leak is possible, as is one other possibilty... if memory serves...lol. Now, the other possiblity is that during the adding of oil during changes or topoffs, some of that oil is spilled and it collects down in a gully along the side of the engine there. In time this could be a significant amount. I would be curious if the oil that was removed was dark like used oil, or lighter like the possible spilled oil scene I described. If really in doubt, get a full engine detail done and then keep an eye on things and have it checked out by the shop again. Good luck.

You have a very slight oil leak, oil is leaking into the spark plug tube and shorting out the coil. The cure for this would be to replace the valve cover gaskets along with the spark plug tube seals. This leak is so slight that you would not notice a drop in the oil level.

You like it? Its a Lincoln. Just buy the damn thing. You're getting a great damn ride for the price. Make sure you are faithful on oil changes. Do all regular maintenance and take it in for lube. It'll be more than worth the three grand when you feel and still maintain that luxury ride. Now me..I love Caddies. You know...Cadillacs. Know what that means? Crusing All Day In the Lap of Luxury In Air Conditioning. A Lincoln is no different. Buy it. Lemme know what you think.

must be a leak right there at the coil, and if it is mounted near valve cover,i bet this is where leak is.if this is also where bolts were loose,i bet it is fine.just look in there later and see if it is filling with oil,if so,probably need to replace valve cover gasket(s).

Does your car have a computerized reset button.
After they come on and the problem is corrested sometimes you have to rest it or take to mechanic and have them rest it if you don't know where it is. Ir sure sounds like there is one somewhere.=======
