1080i means each frame consists of two fields, each one 1920x540 lines

A 720p TV , has many options

a) Drop one field and scale the other one up from 540 lines to 720

or

b) Combine the two fields and then scale it down to 720 lines

Ok, you have to understand that the DISPLAY itself can be any size of PIXELS the manufacturers want.... The 1080 and 720 signals represent a whole frame of picture. That FRAME can be taken apart and resized to fit the display and that process is called UPSCALING AND DOWNSCALING.... Did you know our old 480i signal is LINE DOUBLED on a 1080i display? They take each line and write it twice.... But that only turns out to be 960 lines on a 1080 display.... so how do they add another 120 lines using 480?? Look at the numbers.....120.....480....They essentially add an extra line by INTERPOLATING a fifth line out of the other 4.... AM I Boring you? Hope not.... But I'll let you know the MATH is quite tedious, and I simply can't explain it any easier than I have.... But I let the engineers do the analysis of the Upscaling..... As for you and me....They take apart the picture and rewrite it on the ENTIRE screen and blend it as well as the engineers designed it.... So you probably get a little better display on a 768 line panel than you do a 720 panel.... And You KNOW a 1080 panel is the sharpest, most detailed one of all......

It may not be able to because you have to set the resolution mode on the TV. Then again, you may be able to set your lets say Xbox 360 to 1080i and it will be 1080i. Compare it by setting it to 720 then 1080 on the xbox and see if there is a difference. If theres not then you cant get 1080i, if thats the case then use 720P, some say it looks better than 1080i.

Good Luck!
