Because of negative (and untrue) stereotypes about feminists...that we're bitchy man-haters, etc. If those stereotypes actually WERE true, then we definitely would have a hard time being happily married, but luckily they aren't.

Another reason might be that many feminists are being more true to themselves...some people just aren't suited for lifelong monogamy. I think a feminist is probably more likely to be openminded and more accepting of what she actually wants. Deep down, if she knows that she would be happier devoting herself largely to her career and having occasional relationships and not marrying and having a family, she is probably more likely to do that than another woman might be. She knows what's best for herself and what will make her happiest, and she goes for it, whereas some other women might marry simply because that's what they're "supposed" to do. So, I think this might contribute to that myth. A feminist woman is definitely capable of marrying happily, but she might be less likely to choose to do so, because she knows what's best for herself.

Hmm because some feminists don't like being married, just like some non- and anti-feminists, but it feeds the myth about all feminists not liking marriage or being happily married. Some feminists are bi or lesbian or gay, but what others forget is that so are some non- and anti-feminists. Woo-hoo!
Some feminists are ugly, but so are some non- and anti-feminists. If you want to believe that all or most feminists are not married, and can't be happily married, you'll find ways to confirm your beliefs, despite logic.

A feminist, just like any other person, is going to marry someone who thinks like they do and has the same values. That's what makes for a happy marriage.

Thanks Devils Advocate. I remember that study coming out and couldn't find it!

Seriously, though, because they have an idea of what a feminist is in their mind: an old maid who lives with cats. They don't realize that most feminists are the same women they see every day at work.

it's only men and women who think marriage must be "traditional" in order to be "successful" who believe that. what these people don't realize is that happiness, like marriage, comes in all different shapes and sizes. it's not one size fits all. a man and a woman who have an equal marriage may actually be downright happier than a "traditional" couple, because they actually RESPECT each other and allow one another to grow beyond just a gender role of "house wife" or "money maker."

Denial? Immaturity? Cognitive deficiencies? Emotional instabilities? Unworldliness? Narrow-mindedness? Propagation chant of a lie for self-serving benefit of an alternative vision?

They buy into the ridiculous caricature of feminists painted by conservatives. That, and they don't know the definition of "feminist".

It's an assumption; perhaps of people who want to show they know what they're talking about; when in truth they don't. Assumptions can be dangerous, especially when they give out true falsehoods..

Some people do seem to think this, but I'm very happily married.

Feminist, BTW.

Because they have their stereotypes firmly in place, and the realities of life hold no interest to them. It is like a horse running wildly with blinders on. BTW, it makes a pretty entertaining show for the rest of us... Smile.
