I have a peculiar issue:

I can plug my computer into the internet at the library and behind a friend's router (which goes to the same dns server) and my internet works fine; however, when I try to plug my computer in directly, I have odd behavior:

Sometimes the IP takes a while to e acquired, other times the IP is acquired correctly (not the MS one) but I can't do an nslookup or access the web...

Any ideas as to what might be wrong?

I am not using a router, and am connected to a Highspeed LAN connection.

I was able to connect to a friend's router who receives service from the same company. We checked the DNS servers I was registering when I connect through him and when I connect directly and they are the same; however, nslookup times out on the DNS servers when i am connected directly and I can't access the web.

Well, I need a little information. You say "I am not using a router, and am connected to a Highspeed LAN connection. "

So how does that LAN connection connect to the internet?

If you have a switch (lan connection) which connects directly to a DSL/Cable Modem then it won't work. Somewhere there has to be a LOCAL router which directs traffic between the LAN and the INTERNET!

So what are you using to connect to the internet? That is what "issues" the LAN IP addresses and DNS server information to your LOCAL LAN!
