slip one stitch like you were about to knit, knit 2 stitches together. repeate knit 2 together to the end. you should end up with 27 stitch.

purl 2 together all across the row to the last stitch, purl last stitch, you should have 14 stitches total.

You slip the first stitch onto your needle, but you are not going to do anything with it. Then you knit together the next two stitches and keep knitting two together all the way across. this will give you 1 slip stitch and 26 decreased stitches=27 st. The next row, you purl 2 stitches together all the way across until you come to your slip stitch from the previous row and you purl it. You now have 13 decreased stitches plus your 1 purl stitch=14 st.

well, the top two answered the best. I thought I would tell u that , they already did so, soooo. i agree with them! but, the purl stitch, keeps it all decreased, so to speak, it is so your edge doesn't curl too badly, that is why it is in the pattern that way, so your hat doesn't have a " nipple" so to speak. good luck!
