Thanks for all the responses. I checked out Ron Pauls website ... I like what I heard so maybe I wont have to jump in after all. But I'll need to learn more about him....tmess2...many thanks for what sounds like a very thorough and accurate response.

As long as you run on the left side, and suck up a few of Hillary's votes, I'm all for you!

p.s. Thank you, Ralph Nader, but where are you now?

Its not too late to jump into the race as an independent. If you have access to adequate resources, it is possible to start a campaign as an independent in late February and still have time to make all the deadlines.

Contrary to a previous answer, the FEC has nothing to do with running. It has to do with public financing. As an independent, you are not eligible for public financing until after the election.

The problem is that it is impossible to run an on-line based campaign with any sort of effectiveness. As an independent, you will need to file petitions in as many states as possible to get on the ballot. Each state has different rules and time frames for these petitions. To make sure that you comply with these rules (and to deal with the litigation that always happens with these petitions), you will need a team of lawyers and professional petition circulators in each of the states. Needless to say these cost a significant amount of money -- more than you are likely to raise from the internet. However, none of the deadlines for any of the states have passed yet.

Furthermore, the internet simply is not the best forum for reaching voters. It is becoming a more useful forum, but the majority of voters are not internet savvy enough to be effectively reached via the internet.

Won't say it's too late, but it will require a lot of money. The only one worth looking at twice is probably Ron Paul (though there are others that are decent, but not doing well). Check him out as others have suggested. Good to know you aren't happy with the clowns the media puts up in front.

It isn't too late. But you have to qualify to get on the ballot. Lat time I checked, you need a $100,000 to give to the Federal Election Committee ( and the name may have changed ) and a large number of petitions or registered supporters to "support" the entry. One of the reasons the candidates from the 28 other parties are 'no-names' is because the media refuses to give them any exposure. The media thinks we only want info on D and R's as if they are the only ones deserving attention. If I were one of the other candidates, and met all the pre-requisites for being considered a candidate, I would be screaming for 'equal time' under the FCC Fairness Doctrine.

You sound as disenchanted as the rest of us with the media propagated choices. They all lie and will keep this nation heading in the wrong direction. However you might consider doing what tens of thousands of independents, republicans and democrats are doing this election year and that is supporting Ron Paul. A true American hero that stands for us , the people of the USA and not the corporations. He is honest, when was the last time you remember finding someone running for president that was truly honest. Here is our chance to vote for someone with integrity. Do not listen to the mainstream media they discounted him for the last 8 months, laughing at him, calling him names, trying to divert the public into voting for one of the lesser of two evils. But it didnt worl they have now started giving him more airtime and speaking to him with respect like he deserves. I am voting for someone I can truly be proud of Ron Paul.

You can't win as an independent unless you are capable of getting media coverage. If you don't like any of the anointed candidates the media has put up, why not support somebody else in the "big 2" parties or a 3rd party candidate?

If you have a billion dollars you would have a chance to even get in the race

I am not thrilled with most of them myself, but it is probably too late. This is the worst election year I have seen since I have been voting.
