First I separate my clothes by similar soil level, fabric type and color.
Then I wash my clothes as close as possible according to the manufacturer's instruction and follow instructions that came with my washing machine and detergent additive containers
Washing machines have temperature settings for water, agitation speeds, fabric type, these setting are set with the knobs or buttons you have on your machine. Then, just push START.
It would behoove you to look at the instructions that came with your machine, cause I know they can be different. If you don't have the instructions you can always write or call the manufacturer and they'll fax or postal mail them to you. Or you can go to where you bought it and ask them to make a copy of and instruction booklet for a model that is identical to what you bought. It's important to keep the operating instructions, because it also tells you the warranty specifications, troubleshooting steps, etc...

If it is an older machine, like Jon says, you have to turn the dial clockwise to the cycle that you want, then pull the dial out and the machine will start filling with water.
I have a wash machine just like that.

Some older models have a knob that you set to the cycle, then pull out to start.
