Hi!

This varies from person to person. Twice in childhood, I had falls from height, once from a tree I'd climbed and once through the roof of a building to the concrete floor below. On both occasions, I had the (astral) experience of standing up and looking down on my body. The feeling I had was one of liberation mingled with elation that I could now "go home"

Almost immediately each time, I would then become conscious in the organism. Rising unscathed, my feelings became a mixture of relief and disappointment.

I have never feared death and have had a happier life because of that. But I've also been present when others have died due to my various work over the years. Some leave behind their mortal being with a sense of fulfillment and are content, while others are afraid to their last breath. Death, like all other stages of life, has only as much power as you allow it to have.

Good wishes.

I think the story of the tunnel can be pretty accurate. First, you say goodbye to all your memories by seeing like a fast movie of the most significant moments in your life, then you walk through a long tunnel to the light, the most blissful state of mind, then the bliss fades away and you go to the limits of unconsciousness, sort of like passing out, before you start to realize you are a fetus once again. Well, that's sort of the idea I have, but you should read Deepak's Chopra book: "Life After Death: The Burden Of Proof." It's quite enlightening.

Well I follow Buddhism and therefore I go with their belief that death in Buddhism is not the end of total existence. Death is just closing one chapter and the next chapter is opened immediately after that.
The Buddhist contribution to afterlife, is Nirvana. Nirvana is the end of suffering while you're alive, and the end of rebirth after you die. The Buddha said all forms of life are unsatisfactory because of birth, sickness, and old age; eventually you will end up suffering if your alive.
Buddhists believe they do go to heaven if their practice is skillful, and to hell if it's unskilful. But, never to Christian heaven or hell.
Buddhism heaven is said to be like this.(They have many different levels of heaven) this is supposed to be what the best heaven is like, the one you go to if you have done everything right. Everything is just the way you want it to be. In this heaven, there is no reason to change anything. You are ultimately happy. The problem is that it's not permanent, as is everything in Buddhism. One day in the heaven realm is equal to 400 human years, and your stay is four thousand heaven years, so you will be there a really long time.

But, one day the karma that put you in this heaven will be used up. You are only in heaven as long as your Karma account has merit in it. You can only draw from your Karma account while in heaven, because there in no way to make a deposit. You can't practice generosity or compassion, and you're not striving to gain wisdom. When the karma that put you in heaven is used up... you're reborn...They have different levels of heaven so which one you go to depends on how you acted in your life and determines what you are re born as.

You don't have to worry as your are not around to know once you are dead. The next course is after death and it will be decided by god. Only when you are on the point of death you will have many thoughts/memories coming to you and before you final breathe. After death the body is normally cremated or buried with the customary rites performed and mourned by those immediate and close relatives. Condolences from those known to you will be received by immediate family members.

Well when I died in 1992 after giving birth to my daughter, My heart stopped for about 5 minutes and they were ready to pronounce me dead, I remember wondering why everyone was in such a frenzy and why every one was saying that the baby was going to miss me. I'd had to have an emergency c-section due to the fact that I started to hemorrhage and they couldn't get the bleeding under control. I'd lost 21 units of blood by the time that they did three days later. I remember thinking that my older children weren't going to like this and who would take care of the baby. I remember deciding that I wasn't going to die until my children were grown as the older two would be orphans as their father had died 4 years before and the baby's father was dealing with alcoholism and I couldn't' trust him to take care of her/him I wasn't sure what gender the child was. I just knew that I couldn't die yet and after three days in a coma I came back to reality. But the doctors swore that I was dead and that they didn't know what brought me back.

It depends on a person's belief system. If they believe in the afterlife, it can be that the person "goes to heaven" or "goes to hell" immediately. Some others believe the dead are in a "sleep" and will wake up at the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Nonbelievers probably think that death is the end of all things. Other cultures believe there is a reincarnation, where people who die could come back as another person or another creature.

It is what you believe that counts.

In my honest opinion i think that your body contains a sort of "soul' and when you die i belive your soul wonders around in an infinite place you know. Sort of like a rip in space. I believe when people say they see a tunnel with light at the end that itis the passage way to that place. It is really you seeing your soul leaving and going to that place. If your soul does not want to go on it stay as a spirit and roams the earth as desolate figure. Thats what i think anyway.

Once you die it's over. I don't think some magic thing happens, the cells in your body that define you and all your experiences stop and thus the you that was is gone.
I don't think this is a bad thing at all. You've made your mark. Your family and friends will carry your memory. Maybe you did something to make the human race better - that is your legacy.

Your heart stops, but you will not be brain dead for several minutes. Many studies indicate that people actually hear and think after they have been pronounced dead. Many people who have had their heart stop for 2-3 minutes, come back and say they have heard conversations while their heart was not beating.
