A self awareness of being content with one's current standing in the world. Happiness is probably too commonly confused with pleasure which is temporary, this is probably why a large amount of America's populace (I wouldn't know about other nations) feels unhappy and unsatisfied, because they thrive of pleasure. I am currently seeking my own personal happiness, wish me luck.

a person is happy when they reach the goal of their desire. The more you can relate with what you want, the happier you get.
eg.
Think of chocolate = smile
See and smell chocolate = drool
Eat chocolate = ecstasy
... next day look in mirror ... loose smile

If you deire only physical things, the joy is short-lived. If you develope your self, the happiness lasts longer
eg, learn music, share heart to heart with a soul mate, volunteer to help others.
For me, seeing my kids being unselfish as an expression of their nature gives me tears of happiness.

Knowing I had a day where I served God well, and really knowing how to spend enough time with Him each day. Doing some for of devotions on daily basis, and knowing I'm prayerful enough. Having God in my life, and living for Him and seeking heavenly treasures first. When I whorship Him enough and get deep in Bible reading, and doing more in church than going to sermons, I find that much of the wordly stuff that used to matter to me don't matter to me anymore. God is working through me and showing me how to live a happy life. My life's not perfect now, going through something major now, but I strive to make the best of my situation, and doing that adds happiness.
Happiness is not about materials. Sure, there are things I like to have, but I don't have to have everything, and I believe in making do with what you can have and do have. Material and money's not everything. Those things don't really make you happy.
Happiness is also about having the right kind of people in your life, those who want to see you do well and not bad.
Happiness is not about living a wild and free life, but about a life with responsibilities, not just for yourself, but your children. Responsibilities can be stressful, but it's responsibilities, especially that of parenthood, that makes you grow and better yourself (It's supposed to, anyhow!)
Anyone without kids, trust me, give parenthood a try someday, and it's FULL of happy rewards.
Being there for others is another form of happiness. Selflessness gives you a happy feeling knowing you done something for someone, especially when you do it out of your heart and not looking for anything in return except gratitude.

Know what would TRULY make me the happiest person? After I pass on, and I hear the words from God "Well done, thy faithful servant!" and I get let in through the pearly gates of heaven! :-)

Happiness runs in a circular motion. Those who would catch Eternity's sunrise must learn to kiss the joy as it flys.
