It's a simple question with a complex answer. Basically the Democrats believe in a huge government that will make all our decisions for us and take care of us. They don't care if their ideology will work in the real word. Socialized medicine for example. In all countries that provide "free" medical care you get the same results. A massive bureaucracy that requires a large percentage of that countries money and delivers a much lower standard of health care.
Republicans believe the marketplace will provide it's own solution. And it does. America has the best medical care in the world because people will not pay out of their own pockets for bad medical care.
The war on terrorism. The Dems say we should stop fighting and negotiate with the terrorist. Give them what they want so they will leave us alone. The Reps say stand up and fight to protect our country and its citizens.
Immigration. The Dems say open the borders and let them all in. The Reps say close our borders and only accept the number of legal immigrants we can afford to take in.
In every issue the Dems have an ideology that sounds good but will lead to problems for America. The Reps offer a real world solution.

that's exciting to work out all distinctive solutions to this question. it variety of feels the two events are having an id disaster. I stay in Repub territory, and disagree with with the consumer-friendly philosophy regularly, yet do no longer evaluate myself a bona fide Dem the two. I particularly do no longer purely like the implication that once you're a Christian, you could desire to be a Republican. Or in case you think in relatives values you could not be a Democrat. in case you think too many generalizations, or pay attention to too plenty rhetoric from the two ingredient, it could have your head spinning. Repubs characterize enormous corporation, Dems help social and environmental classes. the middle classification has to choose which party will help them maximum interior of a given historic time. the two events are obligated to whoever contributes the main to their campaigns. So, you could desire to look at no longer purely consumer-friendly philosophies, yet who's preserving the puppet/handbag strings. BTW, birdsnakecat's answer is popular crap spouted by making use of neo con Republicans of the quite hateful persuasion. in basic terms as many Democrats are annoying working and pay taxes, so what he says is a fallacy.

Well, while typically democrats lean to the left, the liberal side, and the republicans lean to the right, the conservative side, there is some intermingling between. In other words, it's not all clear cut. Some democrats are conservative, mainly older people who have been that all their lives, while some republicans may be a bit liberal compared to their compatriots.

Democrats believe in the rights of the group and typically believe that the government should provide social entitlements for the lower and middle classes.
Republicans favor rights for the individual including the right to fail and a more personal responsibility aspect when it comes to government entitlements.

Republicans: the party that knows nothing.
Democrats: the party that does nothing.

Also heard it said that Democrats have NO ideas, whereas Republicans have BAD ideas. Either way...

republicans see a homicide case on the side of the road and decry the assailant and swear vengeance and justice.

dems see a homicide on the side of the road and are equally horrified, and swear to find the person who may or may not be responsible for the death, because they need to help them.
