Our mall has an elevator and stairs. I've been to larger malls and I've used the escalator.

escalator....the elevators are too crowded and really should be open for people that cannot ride on the escalator.

an escalator.
you have your own space on the stairs and don't have to worry about cramming yourself and your bags in elevators with other people or people taking things from your bags.
