Physical protection can be achieved by buying and using a Laptop Lock.... a strong cable that loops around a table leg or some fixed object and then locks to your computer.
Logically - you should protect it with password protection - Windows is excellent at doing this but you need to activate it.
From Advertising phishing, use Ad-Aware protection or SpyBot Search & Destroy.
From Internet attacks, use AVG Free Anti-Virus protection.

Put it in a lockable case. Lock it in a cupboard. Lock the door to the room where the cupboard is. Keep your hands off it.
It might make more sense if you were to tell us what (or who) you want to protect it from.
If you're talking about online threats, install a firewall, install anti-virus software, install anti-spyware software, and run them all periodically. There are many free softwares that you can download that seem to do a good enough job.
