If you ask the religious right and W, he is on our side. If you ask the Islamist/Muslim radicals, he is on their side as well. And therein my friend is the problem. We all think god is on our side when we fight our wars, as god loves to kill people, children, disable them, cripple them - and even kill other children of god. All because we 'love' him more and he is a 'just' god. So the American religious right pray to their god to bring home the soldiers safely ( the ones doing the killing and the maiming ) while the insurgents pray to their god ( the same god as the Americans? or is it a different god than the Americans? No one has yet been able to answer that question ) while they also go on killing and maiming. Wow, what a wonderful god, or gods, we humans are so lucky to have on "our" side. And don't forget, god loves ALL his children so much, that he lets them die by roadside bombs, automatic rifle fire, random shootings from mercenaries on both sides, and maybe, from a nuclear bomb.

We shouldn't be trying to get God onto our side; we should be trying to make sure we are on God's side.

God is on the side of every human being in the whole world. He wants to change individual hearts, not political boundaries or national governments.
