I speak for Sydney when I say San Francisco is very like Sydney.
Sydney and San Francisco are actually sister cities. Sister cities are cities that, for various reasons, share a special link. That link can be an historical link, a geographical link, a cultural link, mutual tourism interests etc.
Sydney and San Francisco are both multicultural, cosmopolitan cities with high migrant populations, they both have a hilly topography and water forms a vital image of both cities. They both have world famous bridges that span an expanse of water. Sydney and San Francisco are both known for their varied lifestyles (Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in Sydney for example), which is a major tourist and cultural attraction. Both cities have a high proportion of victorian architecture (although the Australian definition of victorian architecture and the American definition of victorian architecture vary stylistically to some degree). Sydney was founded as a penal colony, San Francisco has Alcatraz. Both cities are now vibrant economic and commercial centres for business and finance. Also, when you fly from Australia to America, basically most people fly from Sydney to Los Angeles or San Francisco.
I don't really know about a city comparable to Melboure in America, but as the person above said, Chicago seemed similar with the river, and I'm assuming also due to the grid layout to the streets.

One major difference is that in Sydney and Melbourne people don't carry guns. A shooting in either city makes front page news it is so rare.

I live in Melbourne and when I visited Chicago; thought the architecture and the layout of the city along the river were similar. Its not as cold here and we have nowhere near the crime rate :-)

i prefer to live in Melbourne, after i lived in Melbourne, Grand Rapids,MI, and New York City.
i went to sydney and other major cities in Austalia, and major cities in USA as well, sicne i studied both countries. Australia is not as exciting as USA, but life is much nicer because the saftey adn weather. of course, for shopping, USA has ways more choices and prices are much reasonable, but after all, living in a city is much nicer and better lifestyle if you live in USA. if u love to travel outside the countries like me, then you should live in Hong Kong, because it is much convenience and not far from anywhere.

For me, Sydney is like LA and Melbourne is like NY. Melbourne has a cooler climate, more intellectual, arty and avant-garde. Sydney is warmer, more superficial, more 'fun', beach orientated. There is also a similar rivalry.
