My brother kept saying when something is "a couple", it would be 2. I always thought it was around 3, 4.

a couple is 2. Thats why a COUPLE..like a COUPLE is TWO people!!!! OH they make a nice couple!!!

It is an approximate number and depends a lot on the size of the object and intended use.

If someone asks for a couple of olives you don't usually give them 2, I'd give them 3-7 they are small and easily consumed.

large or permanent items would be closer to 2 than small consumables.

same with few, several, and other indefinite quantity words.

colloquially "couple' has come to mean a handful, a few, two, or two or more (an indefinite small amount.)

if you said "give me a couple o' bucks, u would not mean just two, and would not complain if someone handed you three or four dollars.
