In an orchestra the large drums with the copper 'bowls' are timpani (kettle drums). There are usually between 2 and 4, depending on the requirements of the music. Timpani can be tuned to play specific pitches.

In a marching band the big drums which the players carry in front of them and hit either side are bass drums. It would not be feasible to have timpani in a marching band, but you will also see bass drums in an orchestra, although mounted on a cradle and usually only hit on one side. Bass drums are not pitched (ie they don't play a particular note).
