: Perhaps you have the taskbar on autohide? Press the Start button on your keyboard, then right click on the taskbar, select properties, and uncheck autohide.
Does this help?

A screen shot would be cool. But since there isn't one, I'll just guess that your taskbar has been resized to a line at the bottom of your screen. And you should be able to click on it and drag it up to make it big again. From what you said about when an application get minimized, I'm think that it zooms down to the taskbar as usual, but since your taskbar has been reduced to a line, you can't see the minimized box that your application is represented by, in the taskbar.
If you have a Windows (Flag) key on your keyboard, does the start menu pop up from the bottom corner of the screen as well, when you hit that key?
Feel free to add more to your initial question, if you have more information on this. I will be happy to check back in and edit my post according to any new info you can provide.

This usually means that explorer.exe, the program that creates the desktop and task bar, has crashed and not restarted automatically like it's supposed to.
Look on the Task Manager Processes tab and see if explorer.exe is running. (If it is, End Task it 'cause it's probably not working right.)
Now go to the Applications tab, click New Task, type explorer.exe, and click OK.
Watch carefully: the desktop may appear for a few seconds and then disappear again. That means that whatever went wrong has just caused explorer to crash again. That's a harder problem and you're probably going to have to have local help to fix it.

just an idea, but try starting out by going to My Computer, Control Panel, Display and checking the resolution. If you select a bigger resolution number, it will make the things on your desktop smaller and, if they've just "gone over the edge," may bring back your toolbar. If not, try right-clicking on your desktop and selecting Properties and see if you can find any clues there. Also, there should be some kind of on-line support site maintained by the manufacturer of your computer and, depending on the type of response you request, you may be able to get free assistance there - or through a forum on its site. Good luck.
