The polar axis is the imaginary line that runs through the Earth from the north axial pole to the south axial pole.
Its the line that the Earth rotates around (like the centre line of a spinning top).
That axis CANNOT shift.
The magnetic poles, however, could shift (the magnetic north pole is not the geographical or axial north pole).
A shift of the magnetic polarity of the poles has happened several times in the history of the Earth, but it wouldn't happen on a specific day.
What would happen is that the magnetic field of the Earth would slowly decrease over time until it was zero, then increase again with the north and south magnetic poles switched. It happens on the sun about every 11 years.
Montel doesn't understand the science. And saying we will have tsunamis and volcanoes and all kinds of natural disasters on 12/21/2012 is just giving in to the false and completely incorrect hype that uneducated people are buying into. Plus is makes for sensationalistic TV, and truth and accuracy is not important when money and ratings are involved.

Montel Williams doesn't know what he's talking about and this goes for all the other doomsayers out there.
Nothing will happen. You'll wake up the next day and everything will be as it was the day before. It's just people that don't understand science misinterpret what will happen and go on national television to warn us. The result is a lot of people get scared. Just remember that this isn't the first time somebody has said it was the end of the world and it's not going to be the last.

First of all nothing big happens in the year 2012 except for maybe the presidential election.
The polar axis is an imaginary line that extends through the poles outward into space over the North pole. It is now pointing more or less towards Polaris but that changes due to a wobble like movement in the earth’s orbit called the precession. The earth axis is tilted 23 ½ degrees which makes the total time of this action 25,800 years. The next star to take the place of our north star is Vega in about 13000 AD.

It would make more sense (in the limited way that any of this makes sense) if the date that this were to happen was actually dec 12, 2112 (thus 12-12-2112 making a nice symmetry using the 21 part) but i guess no one wants to wait that extra hundred years.
But I guess if it was on Montell.......

Please ignore that stuff. It is absolute garbage.
12 men walked on the moon. Real airliners with real people in brought down the World Trade Center. And nothing major that anyone knows about is going to happen in 2012.
All the nonsense that says otherwise is pseudo-science tabloid hype that is designed to fool people with little or no scientific knowledge, are easily swayed by anything off-the-track, or have not got the logical minds that can separate reality from myth.
Don’t be one of the fools
(Who the heck gave me a thumbs down.? Jeez there are some real idiots around)

This is gobbledigook, sort of like the technobabble they use on StarTrek. It has absolutely no meaning in real astronomy. Don't believe it!
