HP

I personally use Dell, but I do have some experience fixing both HP and Gateway. I think as far as hardware it's almost a dead heat; you could just go with the one that gives you more bang for your buck. And of course "looks" does mean something, so there is a cool factor, albeit a small one:-)

I personally would give the edge to HP when it comes to support. I've had to navigate their support site as well as contact them via phone. Not a bad experience compared to other manufacturers I've had to deal with. I think Gateway support is just OK.

HP is 100% better. Gateway used to be known as good computers, but they began downgrading the quality of the parts. I have never met a gateway that doesnt have issues. HP's always seem to be dependable. Of course I ALWAYS reccomend building your own. ITs cheaper, and you end up with much higher quality part, and cooler looking cases!

Neither.

It only depends upon the tech support behind the two. Or the price. Basically the hardware and software are all the same.

However in a recent poll in a computer mag Gateway consistently scored better than HP. But, user built systems scored way better than both of them did.

I've had good luck with my Gateway desktop as far as reliability. Enough so, that we recently purchased a Gateway laptop. So far (knock on wood) the laptop has worked flawlessly as well.

I will agree that Gateway's tech support is sub-par. When you call, prepare to speak to someone who speaks English as a second language and is simply reading from a programmed menu (they don't really know what they're talking about)

One other gripe, with Gateway: If you register your computer and give them your phone number, be prepared to be called DAILY by Indian women trying to sell you various software packages, warranties, etc.....

Both are good.
Compare specifications and price.
I can speak for HP from experience though - HP offers good support.
