The following websites give the details about the baggage allowance and items not permitted.

If you have no dutiable goods and within your baggage limits, you can walk through the green channel and normally the bags are not checked physically by customs at Green Channel. your bags will be screened and if they find any suspicious items, then only they will physically check the bags. i have travelled from us on coup,le of occasions and have been always passing through the green channel without any problem.

Things are not as bad as it was 5 years ago and custom clearance has been simplified and fast. Hence i do not think that you should have sleepless nights.

Green Channel Airport

What u have writtenis a story from the past. No such thing is happening now.
I travel at least six times in a year to and from Mumbai airport but have never been stopped by customs authorities.
There are two channels for going out of the customs area, if u have any dutiable item ( one item costing more than indian rupees 25,000 ) u go to red channel, if not just pass through the green channel.
all baggage is checked in the x ray machine while going out of the hall and passanger is stopped only if there is some thing suspicious in the baggage. Otherwise it is very very smooth sailing now a days.
U have nothing at all to worry about

Wa Alaykumisalam WaRahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu I have worn hijab to the airport and now I started wearing abaya and I'm planning to go to chicago July 31st, inshAllah. I really haven't had any problem, Alhamdulilah. But just in case if I do, there's nothing I can reallly do except be patient. I was watching a Baba Ali video (can't remember which one) and he said that if you're going to be "checked" at the airport than have some brochures about Islam with you so I made a "Islam on terrorism" brochure. Make du'a for me and family that we have a safe trip, inshAllah! Wa Iyyakum Salaam

basically keep you baggage weight under control. And most important thing, keep your costly items whatever u are taking like ipods, cameras, gold etc with you in your hand baggages. coz these people at the indian airport are stealing it away if it is in the main baggage. this has happened to me. other than that when you leave india, be careful with your passport. after giving it at each counters check if all the pages of the passport are there. i dont know for what reason your grand pa paid 600rs. but i dont think such a thing should happen.

Totally agree with vaishna, keep your baggage weight under control. Secondly, do not allow anyone to handle your bags. Always handle your bags yourself. Baggage trolleys are free of cost at Mumbai airport, you just have to find it. I went to India with my little sister and landed at Mumbai airport and then caught the domestic flight to Vadodara that evening and I didn't have to pay a single dime to the customs. But it is absolutely essential that you keep the weight under control and not carry any electronics that you do not plan to bring back with you. This myth that you have to pay bribe at Indian airports is exploited by the customs officials sometimes but if you stay firm and not pay anything other than what you legally owe them (which is nothing unless if you are importing duty items) then you will be fine.

Well, the information that you got would have been right if it was few years ago. Things have changed a lot. I do travel to India and that too to different airports.

There is no reason for you to be concerned. Just make sure you are within the limits of the law when you go there.

i put a fake ring on top of the bag...work great...they sneak it and later find out it's fake...love it...put any valuables in a smaller clear box and put a small luggage lock through the 2 zippers...then they can't get through to the real stuff

DON'T TAKE OVER WIGHT.AND EVEN THEN WHEN THEY WANT TO CHECK YOUR STAFF AND THEN YOU SAY NO AND THEY ASK YOU FOR MONEY SO THEN YOU SAY YES AND THEN SAY THAT YOU ARE GOING TO GIVE THE MONEY TO THEM OUTSIDE AND SLIP AWAY FROM THEM SO THEY WILL NOT GOING TO SEE YOU!AND YOU CAN AWAY AND PEOPLE LIKE THEM DESERVE IT.
