We are self proclaimed world power. There are other countries which are military and economically stronger than US like Russia and China. By the way Iran is not far behind.

Over that period, it was primarily a matter of industrialization and of economic and population growth. America acquired a great deal of territory durring that period, but it was virtually all vast tracts of undeveloped, barely-populated land.
Around the turn of the century, America did fight the Spanish-American war and take a brief stab at colonialism, which in retrospect, could be seen to have set the stage, a bit, for it's current pre-emminence in global politics.
However, it was really WWII that propelled America to that position. America in 1930 was a large, wealthy (in spite of the recent stock-market crash), nation, but did not really have international influence to match. The European powers were still the major international players at that time.
