If it's high mileage, it's kinda worn. I used straight 50 weight oil (don't use the multi-weight kind) and it stopped the problem on my BMW. The oil pump may be worn, rod or main bearings worn or a failing oil pressure switch. If the engine is worn or damaged and you don't want to spend the money..just use the oil I mentioned. Usually, it's very expensive to just "repair" an engine such as yours, so I would use the thick oil and keep driving it until it blows a rod or something. I checked into the price of a long block for my 84 318i and they wanted $3500. So, I tried the oil and drove the car for another 4 years and later sold it. Kendall even makes 70 weight oil, God knows for why, but it's worth a try.

Low oil pressure. Either the vehicle is low on oil or the oil pump is not producing enough oil to the engine.

Do not put a heavier oil in that car. Even GM says if put 40wt oil in, the warranty will be voided. Most manafactures use 20wt oil anymore.

The professor is right (haven't said THAT since college), most likely a failing oil pump or a worn sending unit.

I say that assuming that you have already checked the oil level in your car.

maybe the oil is leaking while the engine is at idle.

you might want to take it to a shop before something serious happens, and its a BMW so i would def take it to a shop
