A rat!
There were two movies in the 1970s, one called "Willard" which was about a strange guy and his many rats. One was Socretes and the other was Ben.
Here's what the IMDb has to say:
A social misfit, Willard is made fun of by his co-workers, and squeezed out of the company started by his deceased father by his boss. His only friends are a couple of rats he raised at home, Ben and Socrates. It was the title song of a movie about an escaped "lab" rat that was befriended by a very young boy who had a severe health problem and who's daily lifestyle was extremely restricted. Ben was the rat's name.
Please conduct any further research on "Ben" and a related movie called "Willard" very carefully and with the assistance and guidance of your parents, teachers, etc......as the subject matter of the movies or Michael Jackson's lifestyle may raise more questions than you wish to ask right now.

Don Black and Walter Scharf wrote this for the 1972 movie of the same name. It was the sequel to a movie called Willard, which was remade in 2003 starring Crispin Glover.
Ben is a pet rat. In the movie, a young boy befriends the rat, but the rat turns evil and recruits other rats to attack humans. In the remake of Willard, Ben becomes an enormous super-rat.
Despite being about a rat, the lyrics are touching and sentimental, and make no reference to rodents. A lot of people were very moved by the song.
The song's co-writer Don Black has written many movie themes, including the hits "Diamonds Are Forever" (for the James Bond movie) and "Born Free." At his 2007 induction in the Songwriters Hall Of Fame, he said of "Ben," "When it came to writing about a rat, I said, 'You can't write about a rat.' I mean, I'm not going to use words like 'cheese.' I thought the best thing to do is write about friendship."
note:it wasnt michael's own pet rat..just the rat in the film.

It wasn't his rat.
It was the theme to a film called "Ben".
The film was about a kid who befriends a rat. But the rat is also leader of a pack of killer rats.
Rentokil come in and kill all the rats....the obnoxious kid cries a lot because Ben is dead....but then the nasty plague-ridden rodent comes out of the sewers...it's still alive, the awful kid stops crying...the end.

well did not know this one.... but the consensus appears to be that Ben was a rat! Bizarre !
Fancy writing a song about a pet rat - well I suppose stranger things have happened in Michael Jacksons Life - cant say I am that surprised now after hearing he writes and makes a lot of money from writing about pet rats... ! ?? Wonder he was a pet shop owner in a previous life..

A rat - I can remember this very clearly as both my sons wanted rats at the time and I ended up being a bad mum for putting my foot down with a firm hand! lol:-D
