It's an organization that lobbies for the interests of Spanish speaking Americans. The name literally translates to "The Race", which has led some to believe they're an organization dedicated to the racial supremacy of hispanics, but that's way out of context. It came from Cesar Chavez's rallying cries to the migrant farm workers in California of "Escala Raza" or "Lift up the Race", in response to the sub-human working conditions of the time.

La Raza means "the race" it is used by patriotic Mexicans. The phrase started being used around 1925 from a piece of philosophy called La Raza Cosmica by Jose Vasconcelos, basically stating that throughout the generations a "fifth race" of intellectual Mexicans will one day erect a new civilization called Universopolis. However modern day chicanos use it to identify ourselves as a powerful and prideful culture independant from others.

It means "The Race," a shortening of "La Raza Cosmica" ('The Cosmic Race') which, itself, originally refered to the mixed-race people of Latin America, though, as it's used today, it refers to Latin Americans, in general, much like the US Census term 'Hispanic.'

As the name implies, it is a race-based organization dedicated to the advancement of the peoples of Latin America over any others. The name is also used by publications, radio stations, and other media outlets.
