From what I understand, chatting on Y/A is either asking questions that are being directed toward a certain person or people, and answers that are more personal and directed to the asker- not simply answering the question.
They have IM and email for personal correspondence and I think want this arena to stay educational and entertaining.
Just my guess, of course!

I have notice the chatting that goes on between the writers too. In fact I was so angry when I kept reading it, I suggested someone started up a proper place where they could get their comments to each other.I have noticed them mostly on the Current Events bantering with each other. Like school children in the playground.
Someone should tell them, Current Events is about News Current Events, not their life's Current Events.

The Yamster defines "chat" any way that his devious little rodent heart desires. I once asked (with my old account) in Polls & Surveys what people would have for dinner if they could have anything and got slapped with a notice of violation for asking because, yes, they considered it chatting. I think I had a valid point in calling it a poll or survey but you can't argue with the Yamster when he's in one of his moods.

I don't understand why people care?
I mean...
If you don't like it...ignore it...
What's the problem?
Nobody's forcing anybody to read anything they don't want to read...so...again...
What's the problem? Chat or no chat...what's wrong with chat?
If you only want educational or informative stuff...scan the material til you find what you want...that's what I do...
I'm bewildered by everyone's holier than thou attitude about what they perceive this website should be like...it's a free country, people...some people like the playground out in the open group time-lapsed "chat" and others don't...so do what I do...
Respond to what you want and like...
And don't to what you don't like or want...

Simple...what's the problem?

I think if you answer a question that comments on someone else's answer, and then someone else comments on your comment, etc. and it eventually gets away from answering the actual question, that might be "chatting." Also, if you answer a question with something like, "Good question, we should meet up sometime...where doyou live?" That might be chatting.

It's when the questioner and the answerer talk to each other in a personal way.
