Normal 802.11n/g/b range is around 300-400 foot MAX! Inside the house maybe 150 foot is about normal.
NO you won't get anywhere near 20-50 miles at all.
If you need wide area coverage you will need a cellular card!
Wifi is meant for LOCAL use only. If can be used for longer distance but not with little notebook wifi cards.
The WRT54G and the GS are basically the SAME ROUTER, just a button for secure setup is included with the GS.
Either one is a good router but only around your house!

No, you wouldn't be able to use it at that far of a range. The best Wireless routers which utilize the draft 802.11n protocol can only have a range of about 800 feet in any direction from where the router is located.
The only way you could do this would be to add Access Points along the route you wish to use the connection. However, you would have to take into account the range of your router, and whether or not you have places you can place these access points at which are safe, such as homes along the route, etc.
A home or even business Wireless network is not the same as your cell phones wireless technology. Your cell phone company has stations all over the place which provides the signal you use to make the calls from all over their service area. It is much different. A business with remote offices use different technology, such as Servers and such which allow them to have employees access work resources from a laptop. It costs a great deal to implement such technology.
So, the best you can hope for is about 800 feet in any one direction from where the router is located, only only then if you are using the 802.11n draft.
Hope this helps, good luck and have a nice evening.

If you're lucky, 100m (that is Metres not Miles). In a house with reinforced concrete or a non-earthed steel frame, 25m. Maybe.
You want a range of 25 Miles? Either you're very slow (read the manufacturers web page info) or dreaming. Connecting your laptop to your mobile (or getting a G3 modem) would be the only way. Unless you can find a WiFi hotspot.
Try the searching WiKi for how a WiFi system works.
PS, I'm not insulting you, but I really thought this was a joke when I first read it. THIS is a toned down version of what I was going to write!

you are thinking way too big, that router will get you wireless internet for roughly the sizse of an average house. Depending on what's between the signal and the reciever.

Typical range for USB network card is 50 feet range with nothing in between to deflect/redirect the signal. I know some bigger companies do have range up to 2 miles with their enforced transmitter and receiver.
