Okay so my comp is running on two 256mb cards and I was wondering if my system could handle the upgrade to 1gb or even better 2gb of memory. My comp runs on windows XP with a pentium 4, 1.7ghz processor.

You can upgrade up to what your motherboard can support. But 1Gb is optimum for XP especially when nothing is shared with graphics. If you have integrated graphics, better spend for a graphics card instead of going for 2Gb.

A 2002 pc is a dinosaur, any improve could be in basic terms a huge waste of money. maximum in all probability that would not actually have a PCI-e x16 slot for a GTS250 card. That element belongs in a museum or a rural college in an particularly undesirable third international united states of america. purchase or construct a clean and greater acceptable workstation, and this time do not purchase Dell crap back...

well... the limiter in this case is the motherboard at w/e and then xp at 4 gigs, if you have a processor that small, im guessing you can only go up to 1 gig

There use the system scanner to check how much memory your system can handle.
You do not neccessarily have to buy the memory from crucial but u can use this as a way to check how much ur mother board can handle.
