Gas prices are on the rise everywhere. California moreso because of higher property values/higher cost of living (ie: gas stations have to pay more to be here, so they charge more).

For one thing, our gas taxes are the highest in the US, about 45 cents a gallon.
Also, because most of California is designated by the federal government as an air quality "non-attainment" area, our gasoline must meet stringent air quality requirements to burn cleanly to protect public health and the environment. Therefore, a good deal of our refining must be done out of state.
It doesn't have a lot to do with rents; stations in Mill Valley and Marin have lower prices than San Francisco.

Because we are so far from the refineries and they have to drive such a long long way to transport the gas to us? Because we are all so rich?
How about because we are being ripped off and the government doesn't do anything about price gouging because they all have California Fuel Cards and don't pay a penny?
Because George Bush started a war to get himself re-elected and destabilised the main oil producing region of this planet and made Dick Cheney's oil company, and his own, rich at the same time?
Because the $1.5 trillion cost of an illegal invasion of an uninvolved country has driven the American economy into the toilet?
Because the fixed low exchange rate for the Chinese yuan is allowing them to bleed wealth out of the US driving our currency down and making them an economic super power?
It's funny that gas is cheaper on Sonora Pass, three hours up in to the Sierras, than next to the refinery in Richmond. It was $4.10 on the coast last Sunday.
