I've heard a couple different places that you should avoid lunch meat (unless it's heated) and mayo. Like you can get a illness or something from it..my question is, if you can eat that just fine when you aren't pregnant, why is it more dangerous when you ARE pregnant? I don't see the harm in it. A good sandwich is healthy for you..esp if you don't use the mayo (i use Miracle Whip). Anyone know?

Cold lunch meat can carry listeria, which is a harmful bacteria.

By heating the meat, you can kill it so you don't contract an infection.

The incidence of listeria infection in pregnancy is quite low.

No problem at all with commercial mayo or Miracle Whip. If you make homemade, use pasturized eggs (which are in saran wrap at the store).

Lunch meat can contain listeria, which was identified in the early 90s as a cause of miscarriage. It can also kill people who are immune suppressed (elderly, young children). You can have lunch meat, but you need to heat it piping hot. Basically treat it like chicken that could have salmonella and watch for potential cross-contamination. Since I have multiple people in the household, I just wouldn't have it in the house since the chances of cross-contamination area simpy too great. The way to get by that would be to thoroughly heat the entire package and place it into a different container. Way more work that I want!

Well, the reason for the meat is Listeriosis, it's like salmonella but it will be killed off by heat if you microwave your lunch meat. Mayo isn't really that big of a deal, its kinda fattening, but since you use miracle whip I think you're in the clear. They're are soooo many things people will say are harmful, but a good talk with your doctor should clear that up. I would write down most of the things you usually eat that you might think would be harmful and ask about them.

Mayo is fine- just be careful and not let it sit out of the refrigerator for very long (increases the chance for salmonella). Cold cuts are bad because of the increase chance for listeria. The reason you should stay away from cold cuts during pregnancy only is because Listeria will make you sick, but it can kill your unborn baby. If you aren't pregnant then you just feel sick for a few days.

It is important to follow these food rules. I know it seems silly, but people just don't realize how harmful food poisoning can be. When I was 15 years old I was in the hospital for 5 days with salmonella. If I had been pregnant then I would have definitely lost my baby.

The intent they propose against lunch meat is the fear of listeria. I have craved Jimmy John's my entire pregnancy and have had at least 5 of their delicious turkey sandwiches, i am 23 weeks. This can be a moderately new warning from the powers that make a decision all things being pregnant related. If you are that concerned ask them to zap the meat in the microwave for a couple of seconds earlier than assembling your scrumptious sandwich. In my case I just eat what i need since nothing sounds good and at 23 weeks i have received 1lb. I in finding that if I follow the entire being pregnant don'ts it leaves me with very little to devour, drink and do. I simply go together with what feels comfy and take a look at to not over do whatever, its particularly just a judgement name. Excellent good fortune and congrats on the youngster's birthday next week.

Ham is due to the high risk of listeria (bacteria) and mayo is basically for the same reason. Egg yolk should be avoided is runny.
I still eat deli meats I just get them freshly sliced and eat straight away. Get a mayo with out egg yolk and only the whites and you should be fine eating a meat and mayo sandwich. Although some pregnant people like to avoid them completely so there isn't any possibility at all that they might contract listeria.

the explanation they propose against lunch meat is the terror of listeria. I even have craved Jimmy John's my entire being pregnant and characteristic had a minimum of 5 of their scrumptious turkey sandwiches, i'm 23 weeks. this could be a extremely new warning from the powers that choose for all issues being pregnant proper. while you're that worried ask them to zap the beef interior the microwave for some seconds previously assembling your scrumptious sandwich. In my case I only consume what i choose for through fact no longer something sounds sturdy and at 23 weeks I even have gained 1lb. i come across that if I stick to each and all of the being pregnant don'ts it leaves me with little or no to consume, drink and do. I only pass with what feels mushy and attempt to no longer over do something, its truly in basic terms a judgement call. sturdy luck and congrats on the toddler's birthday next week.

You can eat store bought mayo because they use pasteurized eggs in making it. Lunch meat isn't only because of the bacteria, but because there is so much sodium/nitrates in them that they are not good for you to eat all the time.
Go to this website for a complete list of what you can and can't eat: www.awhonn.org.
This list was given to me last year by my nutritionist.

you can *posibly* get listeria from deli lunch meats, but the ones that you buy in the store prepackaged are fine.

and mayo is fine. raw eggs should be avoided, but there hasn't been a case of food poisoning from raw eggs in a decade or something ( a REALLY long time )

i must admit, i hate all the restrictions and if it's fresh & i want it, i eat it. (yes, thumb me down! i eat raw cookie batter & take my eggs over easy!! i'm so evil!)

Lunchmeat - listeria. It's rare, but can kill the baby. Pregnant women are much more susceptible to that bacteria.

Mayo - it's OK. Just don't eat homemade or specialty mayo with raw eggs in it. Store bought (Kraft, Hellman's, etc) is just fine.
