Shouldn't the "holidays" start after Thanksgiving?

I wish I knew. It was a bit of a shock to see the Christmas decorations in the back rows of the Halloween decorations this year. I guess merchants keep trying to extend the season hoping to increase sales.

Well, I know the stores are the main culprit here but, sometimes there are other factors as well.

Here in Utah, it snows so many times people will put up Christmas Lights before the weather turns really bad. I think this might be true of places that have really cold weather.

For me, I try to get my Christmas Shopping done before Thanksgiving because, I found that I could really concentrate on the meanings of the Holidays instead of always thinking about what I need to get for Christmas. I also feel more like I can attend Christmas concerts and such as well instead of shopping.

For stores, it's all about money, honey. I've already started preparing, because I'm going to be out-of-town for Thanksgiving, and will have a full house on Christmas. I have a LOT to do. I won't turn on my lights until after Thanksgiving, when I get back. I hate the commercialism, too.

There are a lot of good answers here and I agree with quite a few of them..Each Holiday should be given its own honor and celebration..and everyone that is out to make a quick buck want to extend Christmas for profit as long as they can..and I suppose if people want to enjoy all the beautiful things of Christmas longer than others, that is their choice..I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and Chistmas holiday filled with many beautiful memories..;0)

It all comes down to consumption. Christmas prep will never come before Halloween, because it would throw off the consumption frenzy for that holiday. Since Thanksgiving doesn't trigger purchases beyond the typical grocery visit, Christmas is introduced right after Halloween to try to get people spending.

My family stretches every celebration to it's limits. Like anything all of that anticipation is so much more fun than the actual event.

Also, celebrating Christmas doesn't necessarily mean spending money. we go to parades, read holiday stories, watch holiday movies, do holiday crafts, anything that extends the fun.

We buy presents all year round, can you imagine the financial burden of buying all the christmas stuff at once. Its too expensive. Id rather see Xmas stuff up before christmas, by the time xmas is over I don't want anything to do with it and like to see absolutely everything down and put away.

no offence, but why do people ask this question year after year?
i'm pretty sure malls, stores, etc. start putting their stuff up at the start of november every year. don't ask me why they do it, though.
But, yeah, I think the rule should be after Thanksgiving
