Lord of the Rings. I read it when I was 12 and it has been my favorite ever since.
Thought I did not read these as a child, I felt likemetioning these others of note; the Unbearable Lightness of Being by milan Kundera. Even Cowgirls Get The Blues by Tom Robbins and Imajica by Clive Barker (I know this one doesnt seem to fit with the others, but I greatly enjoyed this book and have met very few who have ever read it.)

The Water Babies by Sir Charles Kingsley. It's about a poor little chimney sweep that is transformed into a tiny water baby, and his magical journey through the sea to become wise and happy and good. :) Awesome
