Different cultures approach homosexuality in different ways. As someone said in ancient Greek and Roman times it was fully acknowledged and accepted, and therefore is openly recorded in history. Some Greek philopher (can't remember which) apparently said: "you can like a woman but you can only love another man", this by the way may not only describe attitude toward homosexuality, but in those days women did not enjoy the same status as citizens as today. In the pacific islands there is the figure of the Mahu, which could be equivalent as gay I guess and is totally acknowledged and accepted. I actually feel that European and US culture has only just recently openly accepted homosexualy, maybe the past 50 years or so, compared to other cultures where it has been not only aknowledged and accepted but built into society and culture. And of course there are also places as others have mentioned here where gays are put to death, obviously in these cases you would not be talking openly about your homosexuality. So it's not a question of being prevelent, but of being aknowledged. And really be careful with stereotyping Africa, Islam or Europe as one peoples, there are many different cultures in each of those geographical areas. By the way the 1994 South African constitution acknowledged the rights of gay people. If you want to know how homosexuality became publicily accepted in "Europe" you'd have to read up the struggles of gay people in those countries to obtain equal rights.

Well I don't think that it's prevalent in only large white populations, it's just that it ethnic cultures such as the one you mentioned admitting that you indulge in such acts can mean your death, therefore many of them are um "still in the closet" if you know what I mean. Just look at the black american community AIDS is prevalent (I am not saying that it is because of gays or that AIDS is a gay disease) why? Because black women were told to ask their men to wear a condom or to use contraceptive is saying that they themselves in some way were promiscuous because why would you ask a man to wear a condom otherwise (meaning the man couldn't possibly promiscuous and you want to protect yourself), they fear ridicule from their men so they have sex w/o contraceptives getting diseases or unwanted pregnancies, which can spiral into a whole other issue. But my point is the same way black women suffer in silence in the black community, is the same why gay's in the ethnic communities that you mentioned suffer. . . .in silence, because making noise could mean their expulsion or their being ostracized from their culture.

As a Latina (Mexican by using heritage, American by using nationality) i detect it offensive that societies are measured now a days by using how "white" they are. All of Latin u.s. had a heavy presence of indigenous community tribes. it is our inherent custom - Indian. some countries in South/mandatory u.s. have a black inhabitants because of slave commerce. some have a white presence because of the fact of lingering imperialism. end defining us in accordance to the black/white binary. there is greater to this international than only white and black.

It's safe to say that maybe "white" cultures are more open about it, but there are DEFINITELY homosexuals in every culture. In Jamaica, they'll probably kill you if you come out as gay... however, I can name several closet gays that don't come out because of fear.

Dearie,
There are LGBT people in every country. You are completely mistaken when you state that "only European" people are LGBT.
In European cultures, LGBT people are accepted as equals, and not killed or beaten for being exactly as they were made. Which society was it that you considered backward again?
LGBT is part of every culture. Open your eyes.
Have a nice day!

Because homosexuality started amoung the europeans, namely the roman and ancient greek cultures. Look at the bible, homosexuality wasn't mentioned untill they got to the european cultures, the book of "romans", where the first white nations were mentioned, was the first to mention the practice of homosexuality. That is why it's viewed as a perversion in other cultures because it's not natural.

I love your questions and enjoy answering them most always.
I guess to answer your question, whites always feel that they can start something and get away with it and it's ok, the type of misconduct exhibited by them. It's a sense of "justified perversion" you know? I don't think this sick mentality will change any time soon. Great question.
