I only listen to CDs I've downloaded on my computer, or DVD' on my CD/DVD player. The so called FREE online music programs I've tried, have all been from humger: takes an inordinate amout of time to navigate, and the selections are perfunctory at best. I don't waste my time with them any more.
The sound quality on my CD/DVD player is superior to that of my computer: I have a complete set of Wagner's "Ring" cycle on DVDs - its total performance time is around 15-16 hrs. - and I always play it on my CD/DVD player, never on the computer.
The volume I use on my computer depends on the quality of the original CD from which I downloaded the music. Most have been from the local County Library, and their condition is always questionable.
If there is an unacceptable amount of "static" or other sounds from a scratched disc. or whatever, I delete as much of the treble as I can while listening.
Other wise, I turn the volume up to whatever level is required to where I can hear all of the subtle nuances: tamabourines, ratchets, pinching of or softly plucked strings, the tiny triagnle sound, piccolos screaming to be heard over a fff blarring 100+ member, symphony orchestra, or the rarely scored castanets, or what have you.
I fortunately live in an apartment complex with thick walls between the apartments; have lived here for going on 8 years now, and no one has ever complained about my music. I love very heavy, and usually loud german, Wagnerian opera; and thoroughly enjoy listening to some portions of them at almost full volume.

It depends on the videos I'm watching. Sometimes I have to turn it up because the volume is too low and sometimes I turn it down because the volume's too high.

On the laptop I turn them down. I work in an open office environment and laptop speakers are crappy for listening to anyway.

yeah i turn the volume up one below max then just adjust the distance of each speaker. if your receiver doesnt have distant adjustments then turn the volume up or down on each speaker according to distance from you.
