I have a 95 Grand Marquis...I recently found out the heater core is either bad or has a hole. I was told it is a big job, BUT i could cut the hose and cap it as a quick fix. I was told I would loose my heater, but everything will be find. So I have a couple questions. First, is this ok to do or a bad idea...are there any ramifications? Second, how would I do it, just clamp it or do I need to seal it? Also as it has got worse, the car started to over heat, is this a side effect of a bad heater core?

As has been said, disconnect the lines that go to the heater core from the firewall, but an adapter, and run them to each other, clamp them as you would a radiator hose, and off you go.

The only ramification is the fact that winter is just around the corner, and you will have no heat.

In so much as a big job, it depends really, some cars are easy to replace the heater core in, while others become the bane of my very existence....

Plugging it off is OK if you don't need a Heater? You will need 4 Clamps & 4 Plugs! Remove the Hot Water Valve on the Hose that goes to the Heater, Install a Plug on the Water Pump Side & Heater side and Clamp them in Place! (Check it from time to time, it may leak some on the Water Pump Side!

On the Return Side Cut the Hose, Install two Plugs & Clamp Them, Again Check from time to time for Leaks!

Secure All Lines so They don't Move While you're Driving!

NOTE; It is a JOB but a Good Shop or Radiator can do it in about 2 to 3 hours.

Please please!!!Taking the heater hoses off and capping them with a bolt and clamp will NOT affect the cooling of the engine since, when you turn off the heat you are shutting off the circulation to the core.Do this and fill up the system with coolant and you should be fine except for heat.Ps.If the hoses are 5/8" use a bolt of the same diameter with at least 1/2 inch of shank. Clamped on threads won't seal...you only need to plug car engine side ,the heater side... no flow in .... no flow out ,2 plugs or bolts and 2 clamps..Good luck.I can do it in 20 min.

you could take the hoses off but the problem is that those two hoses are going to have be connected together somehow since you have taken the connector (the heater core) out of the loop. coolant will still be flowing through those two hoses so they must be connected. it is ok to do this as long as it is done properly and only as a temporary fix. the heater core itself you need to do nothing with as no hoses will be hooked up to it anymore but see my previous comments about connecting the 2 hoses together . and yes the over heating is actually a primary effect of the bad heater core

First you can bypass the heater core by removing the hose at the core on one end and connect it to where the other hose is connected on the engine, you will be removing one hose completely and replacing it with the other end of the hose you removed from the heater core. Overheating can be caused by plugged radiator, stuck thermostat or fan clutch defect. By the way you will loose the heat inside, A heater core on that truck is easy to replace and cost around $30 to $35 for the part. God Bless

Looping the heater hose to bypass the leaking heater, will work, however you won't have any heat. If the two hoses are different size, that will make it difficult to loop it because of the size difference. Your car is overheating because your engine coolant is leaking out of the heater core. Best thing is to take it to a mechanic and have him fix it right.

bypassing the heater core is no big deal....you'll just be cold and no defrosters......overheating will not happen and long as the rest of the cooling system is operational....its overheating because your losing coolant, so it will overheat.....also replacing it is not easy its under the dash and is enclose in a lot of plastic, which will all have to be taken apart and reassembled...good luck

Bypassing it will NOT leave any furture problem EXPECT NO HEAT. To do this job, it is quite involved, you have remove the dash. I have been working on cars 30 plus years, I know how to do it but would never want to it,...... IT IS A ALOT OF WORK, send it to shop. Oh and it will be VERY expensive to fix.
