I'll take a shot.
example
5 - 3 = 2 or turn it around to read 2 + 3 = 5
therefore
1/2x - 5 = 7 or turn it around to read 7 + 5 = 1/2x
or
12 = 1/2x
12 = 1/2 x 24 (1/2 of 24 is 12)
so x = 24
Ahh, I messed up, yep, it should be -24

Let's get rid of the fraction first...so multiply all terms with 2 - the denominator.
-1/2 x-5=7, so 2(-1/2x) -2(5) = 2(7)...p.s. -1/2x = -1/2 * x
Now the fraction is gone so -1x-10=14, rewrite to -x-10-14=0
-x-24=0, so -x=24, therefore, x = -24

If you're solving for x, it'd be -6. You have -1/2x-5=7. Move the 5 over, which turns it positive and add. 5+7=12. Then, to get x alone, you divide from -1/2, it'd stay -1/2 unfortunately. 12 divided by -1/2 is 6. And voila!

then divide both sides by negative 1/2 (or in other words negative 0.5)
