Well, some people are just snobby, and look down on people for reading something so mainstream. A lot of people don't take his writing seriously since he is such a staple of contemporary, everyday, pop culture. Don't think anything of it... Just read what you enjoy!

(also I doubt these people are "jealous", as was suggested by another user)

I don't. I look up to you for reading Stephen Kings books. I've read them all and he's been consistently good for over 30 years.

Either they don't like him, or they think his stuff is trash. (Some of it IS trash, but mostly not. Mileage may vary, as the saying goes.) Others may strike a snobbish attitude and look down on King because his books are too "common" to be considered great writing. Again, it's just a matter of opinion.

Teachers and professors may be more likely to have the snobbish attitude, but even that depends on the person. One of my high school English teachers enjoyed King's books and her only beef was that sometimes he went too far with using profanity. On the flip side, I had a college English prof for whom even the **mention** of King's name was the equivalent of fingernails on the chalkboard. Mileage varies, indeed. :-)

To be fair he has written some rubbish! But The Shining and Misery to name but a few are classics. I guess some see him as trashy.
