Fibonacci series. The number is the sum of the two before it.

well that would be the Fibonacci sequence, except there should be a two in between 1 and 3...otherwise, not sure

I think you mean 1,1,2,3,5,8,... These are called Fibonacci Numbers. Their rule of iteration is f_(n+2) = f_(n+1) + f_n.

I don't know what you mean by "starts with a v."
