Should I go to medical school or not?. I love medicine, in fact, I was in medical school when I was living in my country (DR). I only did part of my first year, then I moved to US with my parents and sister. It took a while for me to learn the English language and to kind of transitioned my life style to the American way. Now I am married and have two little angels. But my life seems to be missing something, I am not a doctor like I've always dreamed of. I like nursing, but never as much as medical school. Some part of me still wants to persue my dreams, some part of me tells me I am kind of old to start thinking about it. In fact, a Doctor suggested to me to become a Nurse Practicioner, wich is the closest I would get as a Doctor. But if I do that I would be settleing for something less than my dreams. Can anyone please help me with my dilema? What are the pros and cons of getting into medical school at a late age? How much of my family's time Would I have to sacrifice?

Consider the realities.
First, you need to get in: grades, entrance exams (MCAT in US),
Second, the demands of coursework will take you away from family life at a most formative time in your children's lives. Accept that they will be raised by someone else (probably at considerable financial expense).
Thirdly, once you graduate, know that you will be living a monastic existence as a resident for 3-5 years as you learn your specialty. This includes every third or fourth night spent in the hospital. By then your kids will be in 3rd-4th grade AND you will be looking for job that will likely involve 60-80 hours per week.

Plus, med school is expensive ($150-200K), residencey pays poorly, and physicians don;t get paid like they did on TV in the 70s.

Look into it, and be realistic.
The sacrifices are huge.
The reality of the goal may not live up to your expectations.

Then again, it may.

Technically you are not too old. I remember reading about an 80 year old graduate from medical school. It's a question of whether or not you can make the sacrifices at this time and pay the money. Age is not a consideration. Time and money are your factors now. It will take away from your family. Make an informed decision. I hear that it's never too late.

I'm not an expert on medical school, but I know that it is expensive, competitive and time-consuming. However, if it is going to bug you for the rest of your life and you want it bad enough then you should go for it.

Good luck!
