The British had this idea that they might be able to split the southern colonies from the northern colonies, so the victories in the south prevented this split.

the British felt that the north was industrial and could produce guns and bullets and survive on its own. They felt that the south was agricultural, with cotton being a big crop, and that the South was dependent on Britain as a market for its crops, and that the south might be persuaded not to go independent.
